AGALISIGA – Nasgino Inage Nidayulenvi (It Started in the Woods) – (CD) – 4-panel eco-wallet w/ 8-page booklet of lyrics in both Cherokee and English
Horton Records 092 – Released 10.18.2024
20 year-old Agalisiga “The Chuj” Mackey is a Cherokee singer/songwriter from Kenwood,
Oklahoma. He melds a classic country sound drawn from Jimmy Rodgers and R.L. Burnside with
his deep baritone voice honed from his upbringing in singing Cherokee ceremonial songs.
The Oklahoma Gazette calls The Chuj “a fresh-faced country singer whose folk yodel seems to be
channeling an elder spirit. His voice is well beyond his years, creat(ing) something pretty unique,
especially with the vintage-sounding studio work. What I want is for other Indigenous folks to see what I do and be
inspired to do the same, make art in their own way, as long as they’re putting their culture out.”
In a short time, The Chuj (ᎠᏧᏣ) has grown from covering vintage tunes down at the creek to
performing on big stages around the Midwest while cultivating a growing audience among country
western fans and Native Americans alike. Audiences are universally intrigued to hear the Cherokee
language sung in this mode, and captivated by The Chuj’s authentic folksy presence on stage.
His debut full-length country-folk album is entirely written, sung, and performed in the
Cherokee language, under the tutelage of producer Jared Tyler.
